HNP the Hindu Spiritual Care Provider: Hindu Chaplaincy
Hindu Spiritual Care is the art and science of holding sacred space for providing spiritual care to Hindus. This can be understood as Hindus providing spiritual care to other Hindus and to those who have a Yoga, Meditation or other spiritual practice/sadhana with its foundation in the teachings of Sanatana Dharma.
Goals and Objective: This course is created to provide education and training for chaplains based on the essentials of Hindu Dharma to increase awareness of the needs of Hindu patients in the western hospitals, hospices, universities, prisons, workplaces and other environments. Basic education is provided on how Dharmic principles inform the holding of sacred space for empathetic communication with the Hindu and their family in situations where spiritual support is needed. In this course you will get a clear view of universal Chaplaincy skills through the lens of prominent Hindu wisdom teachers. Each week you will have assignments to watch videos, read articles, learn and practice skills, write a reflection paper and participate in a 1:1 conference call with an active, experienced Hindu Chaplain. The student will be required to maintain a Personal Chaplain Manual and encouraged to keep a journal as part of the Manual. The reading assignments contain several useful worksheets in addition to research articles, books, and sacred knowledge. You are not required to purchase additional reading materials for this class. The course is unfolded in three 15-week self-paced modules and can be completed within 24 months. (9 credits)
HNP 6201 Introduction to Hindu Spiritual Care: Hindu Chaplaincy Basics
The purpose of this module is to learn what it means to be present for self and others through Hindu Spiritual Care in the role of chaplain. (3 credits)
HNP 6202 Hindu Spiritual Care: Hindu Chaplaincy
In this module you will be exposed to diverse sets of chaplaincy skills through the lens of some of Sanatana Dharma’s prominent wisdom teachers and foundational texts. (3 credits)
HNP 6203 A Hindu Spiritual Care Provider: The Hindu Chaplain
Participants in this 15-week course will learn to use and demonstrate highly effective communication skills and chaplain specific interventions to provide appropriate spiritual care in a variety of situations. (3 credits)
HNP 6204 Spiritual Care of the Hindu for Chaplains and Spiritual Caregivers of other Traditions: A Jugalbandi Approach
This course has been created in response to community requests to learn more about how to provide competent Hindu spiritual care. This course is for anyone who wishes to learn more about Hindu Spiritual Care.
In Hindustani classical music, Jugalbandi means performance of a single musical composition in which two or more artists perform as leads in the creation of music together. This course envisions a Jugalbandi of the current mainstream established Chaplaincy with an emerging and evolving Hindu Chaplaincy.
This course is being written during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Access to competent spiritual care comes with restrictions, guidelines and special instructions. Assisting a Hindu to access their spiritual care resources in times of crisis is not possible unless you have some understanding of what that might mean to them and to yourself, as the provider of services. The objective of this course is to create awareness through education and training to confidently and competently be present for the spiritual care of the Hindu.
HNP 6206 Eastern Patient and the Western Doctor

This course is for health care professionals, support teams who want to learn about their Hindu patients, and want to have some basic knowledge about Dharmic (Eastern) faith related traditions in India. This course will help both the professional and support staff with effective verbal and meta communication skills to understand the mind set of patients of Eastern origin. They will have a deeper understanding of family dynamics of the Far East. This education creates awareness which impacts outcomes and patients perceptions of the care and treatment received in the hospital. (3 credits)

International Hindu University will also coordinate with Clinical Pastoral Education programs to assist IHU students in becoming full Board Certified Chaplains through the Association of Professional Chaplains. All certified chaplains need 4 CPE credits and 800 hours of study and field experience to be certified. There are also papers on the person’s spiritual beliefs, their own growth as professionals, and more. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad, with members of the extensive Hindu community, have developed and endorsement body (HREB-Hindu Religious Endorsement Body) to recommend all future Hindu chaplains for certification.
