Vision:
IHU- School of Behavioural Sciences will strive to develop into an international centre of excellence in studies in behavioural sciences and a centre of academic and professional excellence in the multi-disciplinary area of behavioural sciences and life skills and competencies keeping in mind the developmental needs and aspirations of adolescents and youth to empower them to maximise their abilities to be resilient and to work towards a sustainable and inclusive society embedded in the spiritual wisdom of Sanatana Dharma.
Department of Life Skills and Competencies
Department of Life Skills and Competencies proposes to start outcome-based courses in life skills education enabling adolescents and youth to develop their skills in negotiation, resiliency, employability, citizenship development, personal empowerment and social empowerment.
Program Aim
To empower adolescents and youth with the skills and competencies to realize their potential and navigate their journey with self-confidence and clarity of vision firmly based on values embedded in the Dharmic way of life.
Why Courses in Life Skills and Competencies
Life skills are the “personal management and social skills which are necessary for adequate functioning of individuals on an independent basis” (IBE).
The World Health Organization defines Life Skills as ‘the ability (capability) that can be imbibed and improved through practice, to translate the knowledge, attitude, and values in to positive behaviour, to deal efficiently with the needs and challenges of everyday life’.
Life Skills help in developing positive and flexible attitude in life.
Life skills support in building self-confidence and self- esteem and enable us to adapt to challenging situations and deal with people.
It aids in develop a dynamic self-image, to improve the communication skills, to make relationships better and handling interpersonal problems, to boost our decision-making ability and make informed decisions and to become a well-adjusted individual.
Life skills are imperative to handle the challenges of life at vital stages of human development. During the adolescent phase or student phase life skills are the support mechanism in academic pressure and competition, exploring identity, self-expectations, self-efficacy, peer pressure, family issues, high parental expectations, challenges brought about by puberty and adolescence, gender and sexuality, coping with stress, exams, failures or suicide ideations and media influence. During the adulthood – at work and or at home life skills helps to handle challenges in employability, work pressure and competition, balancing work and home, parenthood, stability and recognition at work and in society, coping with stress, relationship issues, health issues, financial issues, family issues and alcohol/drug abuse. During the elderly phase life skills helps in addressing health issues and physical infirmity, economic insecurity, isolation, neglect, abuse, coping with loneliness, boredom and low self-esteem.
Objectives
To empower adolescents & youth enabling them to make informed choices in their personal and social life through building life skills
To provide them information, education, and services in a supportive environment where they can learn from experiences
To develop the competencies of them in negotiation, resiliency, employability, respect for diversity, values and citizenship
To enhance the abilities in cooperation, collaboration and participation
Program Structure
Program Credits: 3 credits
Mode of Study: Online
Duration: 15 weeks with 3 hours per week (31 hours of training + 14 hours of assignments, exercises and presentations)

Learning Method: Pre-recorded videos, live discussions, question and answers + exercise, assignments, storytelling, case studies, and presentations, etc

The program faculty are reputed facilitators with long years of experience in the field of theory and practice of life skills education.
